Here are the basic steps to playing baseball: Set up the playing field: Baseball is played on a diamond-shaped field with four bases (first, second, third, and home plate) arranged in a square. The distance between the bases is 90 feet (27.4 meters). Choose teams: Two teams of nine players each are needed to play baseball. One team will take the field to play defense while the other team bats. Batting : The team that is batting sends one player at a time up to the plate to hit the ball. The goal is to hit the ball and then run around the bases in a counter-clockwise direction to score runs. A player is out if they hit a ball that is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground, if they strike out (swing and miss three times), or if they are tagged by a fielder with the ball while not touching a base.
